Artist’s Statement

A photograph means more to me when I trust that it's telling the truth. When it reveals a place, a person, a moment. And when it is beautiful, a composition of light and shadow.
My training was in photojournalism. The goal was to tell the truth, tell the story, freeze time.
Some of these photos have long been among my favorites. All of them were taken in Preston County, West Virginia.

This is a portrait of Stella Elliott in her 100th year. Her daughter June Isaac is in The Climb . Her granddaughter is also in the book, but she isn't named. That's a shame, because she was my babysitter. Here's a chance to say thank you, Becky Pyl
